Public Service Annoucement

Hello fellow librarians! Leah here and I just wanted to spread the word on something cool going over at our friends’ site, 8bitlibrary.com! They are putting on a little webinar called “Gaming: All Libraries & All Ages” for free…very cool. Here are some details from the announcement on their site:

Gaming: All Libraries & All Ages will be a webinar highlighting collection development and advocacy issues that all libraries deal with when implementing (or planning to implement) video games into library collections and services.

Attendance will be fun and free. There will be an interactive chat box for the entire session, and the event will be presented as an un-conference collaboration.

So check it out librarians! There is a facebook event page here is you want to RSVP and get in on all the gamey goodness.

Brand Yourself With 8bitlibrary!

Hello librarians! Leah here. I wanted to share with you a really rad idea going on over at 8bitlibrary.com! It’s called Project Brand Yourself a Librarian, a concept first launched here

http://blog.8bitlibrary.com/2010/01/13/project-brand-yourself-a-librarian/

and was initially devised from a series of Twitter conversations between @justinlibrarian and others. I’ll let Justin and his cohort JP describe the project for you themselves in their interview with ALA

Innovations in Reading Prize

Hello young librarians!

Leah here! Just wanted to announce that the National Book Foundation is giving away their annual Innovations in Reading Prize and the money is ripe for librarians’ picking!

The prize is given to “to individuals and institutions–or partnerships between the two–that have developed innovative means of creating and sustaining a lifelong love of reading” with prize values of up to $2500. So if your library has been searching for funds to develop that Teen Collection or invest in a new Periodicals subscription, you should consider submitting an application. It’s a great way to score some extra cash for the library!

Sidenote: feeling the urge to write an opinion piece or record a podcast? Send us your submissions! Or contact me with questions: younglibrarianseries@gmail.com

Google Wave Invites!

Greetings, fellow young librarians!

Andy Woodworth here and Google Wave has given me a bunch of invites for their preview. I’d like to share the wealth. I am giving away 10 individual invites on a ‘first come, first serve’ basis to the first ten replies of this post. There is only one criteria for an invitation: you must be a current MLS/MLIS student OR have been a librarian for less than five years. When you reply, please identify how you fit this criteria. Leah will see your email in the comment and then forward the list to me. Lately, the Google Wave invites have been going out within a day or two of submission, so there is a quick turnaround.

Bonus round giveaway:

If you are a MLS/MLIS student and you want to use Google Wave for a GROUP project, leave that tidbit along with the number of group members you have in your comment so I contact you directly and we’ll see what can be arranged.

Once you are on Google Wave, feel free to add me and Leah and start Waving! It’s in preview mode so have fun!

(Add “wawoodworth [the "at" symbol] googlewave [period] com” and “yolaleah [the at symbol] googlewave [dot] com” to your contact list.)
